What DNS Lookup shows
- All the main records of a domain — A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SOA and CAA with their time to live (TTL).
- Resolver comparison — whether the answers of our DNS, Google and Cloudflare are the same, that is, whether your changes have propagated.
- Email — whether SPF, DMARC and DKIM exist, what their policy is and whether there are typical mistakes.
- NXDOMAIN — whether the domain name exists at all.
DNS record types
Email: SPF, DKIM and DMARC
These are three records that protect a domain's email from forgery and affect whether your emails land in the inbox or in spam. SPF lists the servers allowed to send email on your behalf. DKIM adds a digital signature to the email. DMARC tells mail services what to do with emails that failed the check. If your site sends emails (sign-up, reports, notifications), without these records they often end up in spam.
DNS propagation and TTL
When you change a DNS record, the change is not instant: resolvers cache the answer for the time specified in the TTL. Until it passes, different resolvers may return different values. Comparing the Google and Cloudflare answers helps you quickly see whether the update has arrived. Before an important migration, lower the TTL in advance so that the switch goes faster.
What else StayIndexed can do
This page is a free tool from the StayIndexed service. In your account you can save a list of domains and see the history of changes to their DNS (also free), while the main job of the service is to track how your pages are doing in Google.
How much it costs
Domain checks are free, both on this page and in your account. Tokens are used to pay for the other services: indexing, speed and backlinks cost 3 tokens per check. 30 tokens are credited at sign-up, no card required.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check a domain's DNS records?
Enter the domain in the form above: we will query DNS and show the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SOA and CAA records with their TTL, and also compare the answers with Google and Cloudflare.
What do A, MX, NS and TXT records mean?
A (and AAAA) gives the domain's IP address, MX — the mail servers, NS — the domain's DNS servers, TXT — arbitrary text, including SPF, DKIM, DMARC and service verification codes.
What are SPF, DKIM and DMARC?
Three TXT records that protect email from forgery: SPF — a list of allowed servers, DKIM — a digital signature of the email, DMARC — a policy for emails that failed the check.
Why did my DNS records change but I still see the old ones?
Resolvers cache answers for the TTL time, so changes do not propagate instantly. Comparing Google and Cloudflare shows whether the update has arrived.
What does NXDOMAIN mean?
It is a DNS answer saying that such a domain name does not exist: the domain is not registered, has expired or has a typo.
How much does a DNS check cost?
Nothing: the check is free both on this page and in your StayIndexed account. In your account you can save a list of your domains, refresh it in one click and see the history of changes to DNS records, SPF and DMARC.
