What an IP address is
An IP address is a numeric identifier of a device or network on the internet that data uses to find its recipient. It can be compared to a postal address: when you open a website, it has to know where to send the reply. Every request on the network contains the sender's address, so websites always see your IP address.
IPv4 and IPv6: what is the difference
203.0.113.7. There are about 4.3 billion such addresses and free ones have practically run out, so providers share them between subscribers.2001:db8::1. Designed for a practically unlimited number of devices. Many providers support both protocols at the same time.Public and private IP address
The tool above shows your public address: this is what websites see. It is issued by your provider. Inside a home network every device also has a private address (for example, 192.168.0.5), which the router translates into the public one. That is why at home all devices usually go online from one address, and some providers (especially mobile ones) give one public address to many subscribers at once.
The quality of your connection will be shown by an internet speed test.
Why you might need to know your IP address
- To add yourself to the list of allowed addresses on a server, in a firewall or in a control panel.
- To set up remote access to a computer, a camera or a home server.
- To diagnose internet problems together with your provider or a support service.
- To make sure your VPN works and your real address is hidden.
And if you run a website, check whether a page is indexed by Google.
Dynamic and static address
Most home subscribers have a dynamic address: the provider may change it after the router restarts or after some time. A static address does not change and is usually available as a separate paid service; you need it if a server runs at home or in the office.
What can be learned from an IP address
An address roughly shows the country or region and the provider, but not the exact address or the person: only the provider knows that. For mobile internet and VPN the location is often inaccurate. That is why we do not show geolocation: it creates a false impression of precision.
What else StayIndexed can do
This page is a free tool from the StayIndexed service. What we mainly do is track how your pages are doing in Google: whether they are indexed, how fast they load and whether bought links have disappeared.
How much it costs
Payment is in tokens. One check of any service = 3 tokens. 30 tokens are credited at sign-up — enough for 10 checks, no card required.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out my IP address?
Press the “Find my IP” button on this page: we will show your public address, the protocol version, and your device's browser, system, language and time zone.
What is an IP address?
A numeric identifier of a device or network on the internet that data uses to find its recipient, similar to a postal address.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 is four numbers separated by dots, there are about 4.3 billion of them and free ones have nearly run out. IPv6 is a longer address with digits and letters, designed for a practically unlimited number of devices.
What is the difference between a public and a private address?
The public one is issued by the provider and is seen by websites. Private addresses (for example, 192.168.0.5) work only inside the home network, and the router translates them into the public one.
Can my exact location be found from my IP?
No. An address roughly shows the country or region and the provider, but not the exact address or the person. For mobile internet and VPN the location is often wrong.
Do you store my IP address?
No, we show it only on this page and do not write it to our database or pass it to third parties.
